Magical Aegean Destination

...lovely pebble beaches and lots of hot, sunny weather...but so much more...
In the northwestern corner of Samos island lies the historic town of Karlovasi, a monument of commercial activity of years gone by. The lovely neo-classical structures and remains of the renowned tanneries mark Karlovasi's distinct identity.

Perched at the peak of Old Karlovasi is the Holy Trinity chapel. Explore the trail to the waterfalls via the old Byzantine Metamorphosis chapel, hike to the Venetian castle and cool off with a swim at Potami beach. Visit the cave of Ayios Andonios, near Paleo or venture out to the secluded Seitani beaches, located in a conservation area known to be a breeding ground for the monachus monachus seal.
Karlovasi lies between two mountain ranges, Kerkis and Karvounis covered by lush forest, a plethora of flora and fauna. The shipyards at the harbour are still active and worth visiting.
Home of therapeutic herbs, abundant olive groves and the aromatic muscat grape so characteristic to our eclectic wine selections, the island of Pythagoras is a mystical paradise.

A natural Aegean Destination...

Bursting with an abundance of nature, picturesque landscapes and charming neighbourhoods, Karlovasi is no doubt unique.
A bustling commercial center at the turn of the century, primarily manufacturing leather products. The remains of the large tanneries are still present in Ormos Karlovasi in an area called Riva. The history of this era is displayed at the unique Tannery Museum, the only of its kind in Greece.

Other large industries included olive mills, oil products, liquor & wine distilleries, tobacco products & cigarettes. Shipbuilding dates back to antiquity...until 1946 boats were hand crafted. There are still some shipbuilders using original techniques in Samos. The shipyards in the Karlovasi harbour are still active and worth visiting.
Characteristic of the island's agricultural cultivation is the olive tree. There are over 1,500 trees covering thousands of acres of land but next in line is the production of grapes. The bulk of vineyard area on Samos is found in the west, north and central parts of the island. Because of the island's steep terrain many of her vineyards, especially those at high elevation, are planted on terraces. Vines occupy nearly every level of elevation from coastal locations to 800 meters. Grapes are harvested steadily from the beginning of August to the beginning of October.
The aromatic muscat grape is characteristic of Samos and from it originates the wines of Samos. You can sample and purchase local wines at the factory near the port. Ouzo is also produced locally. Other products include natural honey from herb and plant sources such as thyme, pine, eucalyptus and poppies. There are also large quantities of therapeutic herbs.

Another contributor to local economy is the Aegean university. Campuses of several faculties span throughout the town.
Before you go...don't forget to visit the folklore museum, the town hall display, perhaps squeeze in a workout with the locals at the sports stadium, enjoy the restaurants, cafes and shops....and don't miss the beautiful sunset to complete the album of your... dream come true.
